The Energise Knowledge Quiz

Knowledge management provides a framework to help companies create, identify, collect, adapt, organise, apply and share knowledge to meet a wide range of business goals. Its successful application is dependent on a wide range of inter-connected variables. The Knowledge Quiz enables you to undertake an initial check where your organisation stands against the Implementation and Performance Management categories identified in the Energise Knowledge Management Transformation Process.

Instructions

The Quiz is broken into five sections : People; Processes; Renewal; Environment and Performance Management . Simply circle the appropriate number in response to the a) and b) questions. There are no right or wrong answers, and the resulting profiles will help to identify gaps and priorities for development and potential changes of emphasis. The Quiz may also be used by teams, departments or within organisations to identify and share different perceptions and discuss ways forward. These ratings may change over time, so it is important to fill out the questionnaire regularly and review the results within the team.

To complete the quiz:

  1. Answer the questions in each section from your standpoint and circle the number that is most appropriate.   The numbers relate to the following descriptions.

  1. Total your scores in each section for question (a and question (b and enter the scores into the space provided at the bottom of that section.
  2. Work out the percentage score for question a) and b) e.g. for Section 1: People a score of 20 points out of a possible 30 would equal 60%.
  3. Enter the percentages into the spaces that are also provided at the end of each section

What Do the Scores Mean?

Questions a) and b) provide a measure of intent and action respectively. The a) questions measure intent and the b) questions measure action.

  1. A similar level of score for questions a) and b) indicates balance between intent and action.
  2. The higher the score in a particular Section and overall, the stronger the knowledge management environment in that area or overall. The variation in score between Sections can indicate potential areas to where action may need to be directed.
  3. An overall low score will either indicate a low knowledge management environment or a high number of Don’t Know answers. If the latter applies, improved communication may help.
  4. If the score for answers to question b) is significantly higher than the score for answers to question a) then the indication is of a difference between action and intent. This suggests two things: a bottom-up approach and a lack of leadership, direction and co-ordination within the organisation. It’s unlikely therefore that any initiatives will be successful in the long-term.
  5. If the score for answers to question a) is significantly higher than the score for answers to question b) then the indication is of a lack of a coherent implementation strategy, high resistance-to-change or poor linkage between intent and action. It may also highlight a “flavour of the month” approach” to the management of change.
  6. The information provided by the quiz will focus the resultant actions for people.   Changes over time in the scores can help track the effectiveness of interventions.
